We will create change through purposeful and results-oriented education

The Anar Academy, an educational institution, launched its operations at the start of 2024, providing modern online education to over 200 female students from grades 7 to 12 across Afghanistan. By integrating human rights concepts into the curriculum, employing modern and effective teaching methods, utilizing an advanced online education system, and ensuring transparency and efficient management, the academy has inspired self-awareness and transformation among its students. This report highlights the key educational milestones that have driven significant change and progress in the lives of the students.

Focus on Human Rights Education

Human rights education is a fundamental part of the Anar Academy curriculum. This subject has been warmly received by students, who regard it as one of the most important and transformative courses. General assessments indicate that alongside other academic subjects, high school students are now equipped with a strong understanding of their human rights. This awareness empowers them to recognize and advocate for their rights in society.

Astila Qureshi, a student at Anar Academy, shared, “Human rights lessons have given me a deeper understanding of women’s rights and have inspired me to fight for equality. These lessons have introduced new ideas, helping me value diversity, respect civil liberties, and embrace human dignity as guiding principles for my life.”

The oppressive environment in Afghanistan imposes numerous restrictions on women, often depriving them of their basic rights. Many female students may be unaware of these rights, perceiving cultural inequalities as societal norms. However, studying topics such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) has opened their eyes to global women’s rights issues. The human rights curriculum is specifically designed to raise awareness and empower girls with knowledge of their rights.

Marzia Mohammadi, a 12th-grade student, explained, “I am a human being, entitled to equal rights regardless of race or gender. I expect to be treated with humanity and dignity, and I am committed to respecting the rights and freedoms of others.” She added that the lessons have become a blueprint for her life.

Shagufta Sahar, an 11th-grade student, believes that human rights education teaches women not to remain silent in the face of discrimination and injustice. It motivates them to actively participate in social and political life, recognizing this as their fundamental right. “I feel fortunate to be part of Anar Academy,” she expressed. “Now I understand the rights women hold in society.”

Rania Azimi, another 11th-grade student, stated that the subject of human rights has offered her a fresh perspective on life. In a brief statement, she said, “Human rights concepts have profoundly influenced our minds, shaping our thoughts and emotions in positive ways. When human rights are respected, people experience greater security, respect, and freedom. This fosters kindness, understanding, and empathy in how we interact with one another. Human rights remind us that the world’s diversity makes it more vibrant, and these differences should not only be accepted but celebrated.”

Parents have also welcomed the inclusion of human rights in the curriculum. The father of one student, who wished to remain anonymous, described it as a “positive initiative” that has encouraged his daughter’s personal growth. He believes that knowledge of human rights reduces girls’ vulnerability in both family and society.

Enhancing Students’ Skills Through Life Skills Education

Another significant achievement of Anar Academy is the enhancement of students’ skills through the “Life Skills” course. This subject, intentionally integrated into the curriculum, has been enthusiastically embraced by students.

Nazanin Soltani, a life skills instructor, explained that the subject draws heavily from psychology and thus captures students’ interest. She stated, “This course equips students to navigate life’s challenges and build meaningful connections with others and their environment. Students first need a fundamental understanding of themselves, and this course helps them discover their personalities, talents, and behaviors.”

According to Ms. Soltani, one notable outcome is the increased curiosity and confidence among students. They actively participate in class discussions and ask more questions. Developing a sense of inquiry is considered a vital aspect of the academy’s educational philosophy.

The life skills course emphasizes both short- and long-term goals. Short-term objectives include time management, stress reduction, improved communication, and increased self-confidence. Long-term goals focus on self-awareness, social skill development, personal relationship enhancement, and emotional intelligence. These efforts aim to foster healthier life patterns and improve overall quality of life.

Ms. Soltani noted that students’ performance and confidence have significantly improved since the start of the academic year, signaling hopeful and positive changes.

Effective Educational Systems and Efficient Management

One of Anar Academy’s greatest achievements is the implementation of a modern online education system.

Ms. Etemadi, the head teacher at Anar Academy, said, “The learning outcomes and skills development achieved through the online system have been exceptionally satisfying.” This approach has been widely appreciated by families as well.

The academy utilizes its proprietary Learning Management System (LMS), supplemented by general platforms like Google Meet and WhatsApp when necessary. Despite the limited capacity of this pilot academic year, the academy received overwhelming applications. Ms. Etemadi explained that criteria for student admission included stable internet access, strong academic performance, commitment, and motivation. Efforts were also made to maintain geographical balance, ensuring equal opportunities for students from various regions of Afghanistan.

Future Vision of Anar Academy

Although a newly established institution, Anar Academy has laid a strong foundation in its first year and is now focusing on further growth and expansion.

Benazir Poya, Heads of Academy, emphasized, “Our strategic goals go beyond the oppressive conditions imposed by the Taliban. We aim to empower students with education, practical skills, and professional development, enabling them to achieve self-sufficiency and economic, social, and legal progress.” As part of this vision, the academy offers courses in human rights, life skills, and German language.

Ms. Poya is optimistic about the academy’s future. She envisions Anar Academy becoming a more impactful and expansive institution within two years, promoting positive change in women’s lives and advocating for their rights.

Banafsha (pseudonym), a 10th-grade student, expressed her gratitude for the academy and its support. She aspires to continue her education and receive scholarships, adding, “Understanding women’s rights has made me concerned not only for my life but also for the lives of my peers. I am determined to fight for our rights.”

In response to questions about scholarships for graduates, Ms. Poya mentioned plans to launch a nursing program (Ausbildung) in 2025. Additionally, the academy’s standardized curriculum aligns with international benchmarks, enabling graduates to apply for higher education scholarships abroad.

Currently, Anar Academy is recognized as one of Afghanistan’s leading online educational platforms, adhering to international standards for online learning. The academy’s future plans promise even greater opportunities for its students.
